The distribution and chemical industry sectors must also comply with strict sustainability requirements if they want a place at Maasvlakte 2. One principal requirement concerns the agreements in the Rotterdam Climate Initiative. The municipality of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, DCMR Rijnmond Environmental Protection Agency and Deltalinqs, the Rotterdam port and industries' association, are collaborating in this ambitious climate programme.
The objectives are:
- 50 per cent less CO2 emissions in 2025 compared with 1990;
- prepare the city for climate change;
- strengthen Rotterdam's economy.
This translates for the whole port into matters including energy efficiency, the use of sustainable energy, and maximum CO2 capture and storage.
The clustering of the chemical industry also yields environmental gains.
