The first container terminal that will be taken into use on Maasvlakte 2 will be operated by a combination of the stevedore DP World and four shipping companies: the New World Alliance (MOL, Hyundai and APL) and CMA CGM. In 2006, Dubai-based DP World took over P&O Ports, assuring itself of a strong position as the third-largest global terminal operator in the world. The four shipping companies are all in the international top of global container shipping companies. The shipping companies APL, HMM and MOL work closely together in operational terms in the New World Alliance, while CMA CGM operates both on an independent basis and with partners in specific areas.
The terminal will feature a 20-m deep sea quay with a length of 1,900 m, a 550-m quay for inland vessels and feeders and its own rail terminal with a connection to the Betuweroute. The Rotterdam World Gateway terminal will have a capacity of some 4 million TEU and will become operational in 2014.
