20,000 concrete blocks get a new life

Over 20,000 concrete blocks from Maasvlakte's block dam are to get a new life in Maasvlakte 2's hard seawall. The 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 metre blocks each weigh around 43 tons and must be placed and inspected. A special crane, the Blockbuster, puts the concrete cubes into their new positions with infinite precision. This is cheaper and causes less environmental impact.

In addition, about seven million tons of extra stone is needed. Five million tons of this will come from quarries in Norway and Scotland. The other two million tons of quarrystone originates from the old seawall. This too is sustainable reuse.
