Innovative thinking also characterises the design of the beach and the dunes along the west coast. PUMA has decided to mainly use sand from the Pleistocene, instead of the finer-grained Holocene sand that is normally used for beach nourishment projects in the Netherlands. This allows the contractor to construct a steeper beach with less sand. This innovation limits the construction and maintenance costs and minimises the seabed surface area affected by the construction activities.
> Pleistocene sand limits construction and maintenance costs
> Deep extraction of sand reduces the area of seabed affected by construction
