Making a conscious choice for man, environment and economy

To the Port Authority, sustainable means future-proof: today's investments must not be at the cost of future generations' quality of life. Sustainability is all about balancing three dimensions:

  • Ecological: consciously considering nature, the environment and energy.
  • Economic: maintaining and strengthening the position and quality of the Port of Rotterdam.
  • Social: improving the quality of life in the city and region.

In all phases, for all projects

Maasvlakte 2's scale provides unique opportunities to really push back the frontiers in the sustainable development of a new port and industrial area. Taking as horizon the quality of life for future generations, an integral approach to construction, fitting out, operation and maintenance was opted for from the very start of the project. In this context, optimal economic and sustainable solutions were expressly searched for.

Sustainability is taken into account in all phases of the project and in all subprojects. The most sustainable solutions are always sought out. Environmental gain and economic development prove to be particularly compatible. This choice even leads to innovative and cost-saving solutions.

Some concrete examples:

  • Sustainable design: The streamlined, rounded-off shape has minimal effects on the North Sea. Moreover, the compact shape takes up less room, so that less nature is lost and less sand is needed.
  • Sustainable construction: A sand extraction location near the coast was selected from those available. This saves energy. Further, part of the sand needed comes from reuse, some of it from the deepened port basins.
  • Sustainable operation: Companies must make as much use as possible of each other's residual heat and waste products. Businesses are also obliged to transport less freight by truck and more by rail and inland shipping.

Healthy living in a healthy port

In the development of Maasvlakte 2, the following dual objective is central:

  • strengthening the position of the port of Rotterdam and
  • improving the quality of the living environment in the Rijnmond region.

The Rotterdam Mainport Development Project exists in order to realise these two aims. Three sub-phases are therefore inextricably linked together: the construction of Maasvlakte 2 including the legally obligatory environmental compensation; the construction of a new nature and recreation area of 750 hectares; and the implementation of various quality of life projects in the Existing Rotterdam Area.
