The impact of the development and operation of Maasvlakte 2 on the local biotope

The development of Maasvlakte 2 will have effects on the local biotope, including the habitat of several protected bird species. This impact will be compensated by the development of a seabed protection area with rest areas in the Voordelta. Due to an increase in the emission of polluted air, particularly by shipping traffic, the operation of Maasvlakte 2 is expected to have an impact on the Voorne and Kapittelduinen dune areas. This possible impact will be amply compensated for via the development of a new dune area off the coast of Delfland.

Which effects on the biotope are to be expected?
Impact on the biotope due to the presence of Maasvlakte 2
Impact on the biotope due to the operation of Maasvlakte 2

New nature at Maasvlakte 2
Not only will the nature that is lost or subjected to degradation due to the development of Maasvlakte 2 be amply compensated for, the new area will even provide room for new nature. This will be most apparent at the new Maasvlakte seawall, a natural row of dunes that will encircle the new harbour area. In addition, new biotopes will spontaneously develop at sites that have not yet been taken into use, which will be managed with due care.
