Increase of traffic
Whether Maasvlakte 2 becomes a reality or not, it has already been established that all traffic (for commuting, business or pleasure) on all the motorways and through roads around Rotterdam will increase in the future.
Percentage of port-related traffic
Lorry traffic coming from the Maasvlakte is heading mainly to destinations south and east of Rotterdam. This means less port-related traffic along the north shore of the port area.
A20
About 10% of traffic on the A20 is driving to and from the port. Having Maasvlakte 2 in operation will add another 1% to this.A4
The A4 (Benelux Tunnel) will be taking on additional traffic due to more vehicles entering from the A15. The A4 will be extended to reach The Hague before 2020. After 2020, it will be extended toward Bergen op Zoom.A15
The A15 will be extended to Maasvlakte 2 but the latter will have little impact on the A15. At Spijkenisse and Hoogvliet, for example, Maasvlakte 2 will account for only 2 to 4 percent of all traffic by 2020. This percentage will increase to 10% by 2033. The Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management is currently working on widening the A15 by means of additional lanes and a system of main and parallel lanes. The existing Botlek Bridge will be replaced by a higher one. The widening of the A15 (start of construction expected around 2009) is unrelated to the realisation of Maasvlakte 2. A widened A15 will meet demands until around 2020 after which the situation will have to be re-examined.N57 and N218
Although traffic on the ‘Dammenroute’ (N57) and the N218 will increase in coming years, the impact of Maasvlakte 2 on these routes will be limited. The same goes for the section of the N57 running through Voorne-Putten. Here, an increase is expected from 3% in 2020 to 7% in 2033. The locations at which congestion occurs are caused primarily by the daily commuter rush-hour periods. The N57 will remain a busy road in spite of a planned widening between Groene Kruisweg and the A15 (at the Harmsen Bridge).
Sound pollution caused by traffic
In spite of the increase in road traffic on the A4, A15 and A20, the sound pollution produced by it will be reduced thanks to the use of quieter asphalt and to vehicles being equipped with quieter tyres and engines. These kinds of measures and the use of acoustic barriers will result in a steady decrease of the number of homes in Rijnmond exposed to sound levels exceeding 50 dB(A)*.
*dB(A) is a unit for measuring noise level. For the sake of comparison, the tone of normal conversation is 60 dB(A) and the noise present in a normal living room is 40 dB(A).
