The port remains safe

Crisis management in the Port of Rotterdam is professionally organised. The port has modern traffic control and high-level nautical services (pilots, towage services and oarsmen). Fast, up-to-date, well-equipped boats with trained crews can be deployed in case of any possible disaster situation. A basic principle in the construction of Maasvlakte 2 is that the level of safety - in and around the port - will remain unchanged, even when shipping traffic increases.

Measures
Extensive research has been conducted into the consequences of an increase in shipping traffic and the kind of measures needed to ensure safety. Examples of these measures include:

  • enlarging the infrastructure, e.g., widening the Beerkanaal and moving the position of jetty 2 of the Maasvlakte Oil Terminal.
  • devoting constant attention to the improvement of shipping traffic.
  • arriving at firm agreements with the contractor in regard to implementation before initiating construction on Maasvlakte 2, the objective being to maintain the safety of shipping and to minimise any possible disruption of shipping activities. Traffic control will play an important role with this.

The port remains safe

All these measures are intended to ensure that the port remains safe. The new terminals for liquid natural gas (LNG) will not be a source of any safety problems either.
