Rotterdam Mainport Development

The Rotterdam Mainport Development Project (PMR) was launched at the end of the 1990s to create space for the port and industry in mainport Rotterdam to develop. Simultaneously with this spatial development, PMR aims to improve the quality of the environment in and around the port. This dual objective characterises the Rotterdam Mainport Development Project.

Working together
The project is a joint venture by the Ministries of Transport and Public Works, Housing, Spatial Planning & the Environment, Economic Affairs, Agriculture, Nature & Food Quality and Finance, Rotterdam metropolitan region, the municipality of Rotterdam and the province of South Holland.

The Rotterdam Mainport Development Project consists of three sub-projects:
• The construction of Maasvlakte 2, including compensation for its impact on the natural world.
• Existing Rotterdam Area, execution of projects in the current port and industrial area for better and cleverer use of the space and to improve the environment for those living in the area.
• The creation of a 750-hectare new recreation and nature area to the north and south of Rotterdam.

The following parties are responsible for the sub-projects:
• the Port of Rotterdam Authority will bear the costs and risks of  constructing Maasvlakte 2
• the province of South Holland will take the lead when it comes to the creation of 750 hectares of new space for nature and recreation
• the municipality of Rotterdam will be supporting the sub-project Existing Rotterdam Area.
