One port, two objectives
Creating space in both the port and the region, for both business and nature. So that the quality of life in the whole region improves in net terms. This is the dual goal of the Rotterdam Mainport Development Project (PMR).
Link
The objectives are therefore linked. The expansion of the port, in the shape of Maasvlakte 2, can only be achieved if the nature and compensatory projects are also launched. In short, port expansion and enhancing the quality of life go hand in hand.
Consultation and decision-making
So that Maasvlakte 2 and improvements to the quality of life can be achieved simultaneously, consultations started early. With neighbouring municipalities and with interest groups representing nature, the environment and fisheries, for instance. This resulted in resounding agreements, which were set down in the government order the Key Physical Planning Decision Plus PMR.
Port of Rotterdam Authority
The Port of Rotterdam Authority will bear the costs and risks of building Maasvlakte 2. It is a business-case driven project, which is being very closely monitored by the Port Authority’s shareholders: the State and the municipality of Rotterdam.
