Business case
Business case study
The Maasvlakte 2 Project is subject to a business case study: an economic mathematical model that simulates reality. The Maasvlakte 2 Project Organisation constantly enters current data regarding market developments, market demands, construction methods and many other factors. The mathematical model then calculates whether the desired profit on investment will still be realised. In this way, it is relatively simple to keep an eye on the project’s progress. If realisation of the desired profit is in danger, changes can be made in advance. Directing the project by means of the business case study prevents the creation of sites that would later prove unprofitable.
Design & Construct
Maasvlakte 2 is being realised on the basis of Design & Construct; i.e., the contractor hired by the Port of Rotterdam Authority will receive an integrated contact. He will thus be responsible for the design and implementation as well as for the risks involved. Employing this construction, the Port of Rotterdam Authority gets the land reclamation done on time, at a fixed price, according to previously made agreements, and without sudden changes in conditions.
Prince2
The way in which the Maasvlakte 2 Project Organisation is managing the direction and control of the project attracts international attention. In 2004, Maasvlakte 2 became the first large project in the Netherlands to be accredited by PRINCE2 (Projects In Controlled Environments). The British PRINCE2 is one of the three most commonly used methods of project management in almost seventy countries. In 2005, the Port of Rotterdam Authority received the Best Practice Award for PRINCE2 in recognition of the thorough way it was preparing for the construction of Maasvlakte 2.
