Kids win prizes for playing DOCKS!

11-09-2006

Hans Smits, Director of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, recently presented prizes to the three proud winners of the DOCKS! game.

A trial version of this game, held during the World Harbour Days, challenged young people to design their own port in consideration of both environmental and economic aspects.

The three winners, aged 11, 14 and 16, defeated hundreds of other young people. As part of their prize, the winners and their school classes visited the port. The Port Authority had worked together with the Mainport Rotterdam Educational Information Centre in developing a tailor-made programme for their visit. As of now, the game can be played online.

DOCKS! is a computer game requiring you to develop and manage Maasvlakte 2. In this regard, it is similar to such popular games as SimCity and Roller Coaster Tycoon. As the port manager, you have to use your wits to get companies established in the right place, have them cooperate with each other, and, meanwhile, not lose sight of the environment. The game takes about 15 minutes to play. How successful you are is indicated by a counter that records expenditures and earnings. The objective is to in a playful manner come to understand what enters into developing Maasvlakte 2.
