Royal visit at Aquaterra

02-07-2007

This week, the Maasvlakte 2 Project Organization is participating in Aquaterra 2007, the new World Forum on Delta and Coastal Development. Aquaterra is being held in the RAI Amsterdam from 7 through 9 February.

The conference was opened today by His Royal Highness, Prince Willem Alexander.

Aquaterra is the first event to assemble important decision-makers throughout the world for the purpose of addressing their area of expertise: water management and delta and coastal developments. The conference thus acts as a meeting place for specialists from government, knowledge institutes, companies and industry, etc. One of the important issues to be discussed will be the effects of climate change. The Maasvlakte 2 Project Organization is displaying its scale model of Maasvlakte 2 on the exhibition floor and will be providing information about the project on Wednesday and Friday. Two presentations about Maasvlakte 2 will be given on Friday.

His Royal Highness, Prince Willem Alexander, accompanied by L. Asscher (the Deputy Mayor of Rotterdam) and Ms. M. Schulz - Verhagen, also visited the exhibition floor. Following the opening of the conference, he made a round of the exhibitions and also called at the model of Maasvlakte 2. He displayed his interest in the project and asked questions about such matters as access to the port.

On Friday, Mr T. Vellinga (Project Manager) and Mr. P. Sandee (Tender Strategy) will give a presentation listed in the programme under the topic "Cities in deltas and exploiting the opportunities of coasts". Their presentation will be entitled "Dutch Coastal Development: Extension of the Port of Rotterdam (Maasvlakte 2)". Mr Vellinga will talk about the approach to the decision-making process for Maasvlakte 2 and the methods used to analyse impacts on the environment. P. Sandee will address the Design & Construct method to be used in tendering for Maasvlakte 2: determine a good balance between direction and latitude and challenge the four largest dredging companies of the world to make the best use of their experience and expertise.
