Rotterdam approves Maasvlakte 2

04-11-2007

The Rotterdam municipal council has approved the preliminary plans for Maasvlakte 2.

The council adopted the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and the design for the zoning plan with a large majority.

The EIA and the design for the zoning plan describe how the new port area will look. A 6,000-page report describes what the impact on the environment will be and what will be done to compensate for any negative effects.

The municipal council's approval is important because the council determines the zoning plan. Now that the preliminary version has been approved there will be an opportunity for others to give input on the plans.
Starting on 20 April, environmental organisations and citizens may voice any objections they have to the construction of Maasvlakte 2.
