First showing of film by Jan Dibbets on 14 June in Information Centre FutureLand
04-27-2009On 14 June, the ‘first showing' will be held of the film ‘6 Hours Tide Object with Correction of Perspective'. This will take place in FutureLand, the information centre on Maasvlakte 2, the expansion project of the port of Rotterdam.
Jan Dibbets produced this artwork on the virginal Maasvlakte beach early one Sunday morning at the beginning of February during Art Rotterdam. The end result is an 8 minute-long film. It has been exactly 40 years since Dibbets made the original of this now classic work, which was shown on German television as part of Gerry Schum's Fernsehgalerie I ‘Land Art' film series (1968-1969). The film shows how, with the help of a shovel, Dibbets draws a rectangle in the sand in which a correction is made to allow for the perspective. The rising tide then washes the drawing away.
Dibbets's film will be shown at the information centre FutureLand every half hour from 1 pm on Sunday 14 June. At 3pm, there will be a special show that will also include a documentary on how the work came about. Entry to FutureLand is free of charge. On the following three Sundays (21 and 28 June and 5 July), Dibbets's film will be shown every hour, on the hour during the afternoon. FutureLand is situated on the edge of the current Maasvlakte, Europaweg 902 (500 m past the Routiers restaurant). See also the information on the FutureLand-page.
Jan Dibbets's ‘6 Hours Tide Object with Correction of Perspective' is the first project to be realised in the context of the project Portscapes, for which ten artists will be producing an artwork this year to mark the occasion of the construction of Maasvlakte 2. Both Dutch and international artists have been asked to participate by the curator duo Latitudes. Portscapes is an artistic voyage of discovery of the architectural, political, social and ecological past, present and future of the port of Rotterdam, and was commissioned by the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Portscapes has come about with the support and content-related advice of SKOR (Stichting Kunst en Openbare Ruimte - Foundation Art and Public Space).
As an artist, Jan Dibbets is a pioneer in the fields of light, observation, perspective and space. In this particular project, in which he makes use of sand, sea and time, he gets the viewer thinking about observation and perception. The creation of a new version of Dibbets's work was chosen to launch Portscapes, because it is in line with the aims of this project, which hopes to challenge people in a similar way to look at the port differently.
