Three consortia of dredging and construction companies have qualified for the building of Maasvlakte 2.

In the construction of Maasvlakte 2 the Port of Rotterdam Authority will be explicitly seeking clients who intend to utilize their container terminal sustainably.

In a letter dated 24 October 2005, Karla Peijs, Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and Gerrit Zalm, Minister of Finance asked the Lower House urgently to approve the State's shareholding in the Port of Rotterdam Authority with effect from 1 January 2006 and to allow further preparations for the PMR.

On 5 September, Port of Rotterdam (Havenbedrijf Rotterdam) will start to invite tenders for the design and construction of Maasvlakte 2, the port site of around 2000 ha in the North Sea, which will be created right alongside the current Maasvlakte.

The transport minister, Karla Peijs, has informed parliament that closing the loopholes in the Key Physical Planning Decision-plus (PKB-plus) for the Rotterdam Mainport Development Project (PMR) will delay Maasvlakte 2 construction by 1.5 years.

The Council of State has not torn out the heart of the PKB (Key Physical Planning Decision): the Council actually endorses essential parts of the PKB.

The project ‘Maasvlakte 2' has produced the project initiation document (PID).
