Rotterdam is the leading port of Europe. Providing direct employment for some 60,000 people, the Rotterdam area is of great importance for the region. The contribution it makes to the Dutch economy in its entirety is greater still. For this reason, it is very important to invest in the future of the port.
In 2004, the direct gross added value of the port and industrial area amounted to EUR 6 billion, or 1.4% of the Dutch Gross National Product.
The Maasvlakte 2 development is strongly geared towards container transshipment. In 2004, the amount of containers handled in the port of Rotterdam increased by 16% to 8.2 million TEU. In the following year, the port dealt with 9.3 million TEU, a 13% increase with regard to 2004. In Northwest Europe, Rotterdam has a market share of 30%. The current growth in transshipment volume surpasses even the most optimistic predictions. Rotterdam is now expected to handle some 12 million TEU in 2009 alone.
This underlines the importance of the Maasvlakte 2 development.
