All in all, some 12 km of sea defences will be protecting the new port area. These consist of 4 kilometre of hard sea defences (seawall) and 8 kilometres of soft sea defences (beach and dunes). The landward side of the sea defences will accommodate recreational areas, an extension of the A15 motorway, the Betuweroute railway line and pipeline facilities.
