In early 2007, archaeological research was carried out on the North Sea seabed at the future location of Maasvlakte 2. Items found during this research ranged from old anchors, fishing nets, chains and a large block of concrete to the wooden frame of a small ship that was half buried in the sand on the seafloor. A sample of wood was taken from this last find, and the growth rings in this sample will be studied in order to determine the age of the wreck. Only then will it be clear what its archaeological value is, because scientists will know whether or not there are many of its kind. A copper pan was also found near the ship’s wreck, which may help to date the find.
